Why Transformer Size Matters More Than Most Techs Realize
A transformer that's undersized for the load will overheat and fail — sometimes within days of installation. Many "bad transformers" are really correctly-sized transformers being asked to do too much. Understanding VA ratings prevents this.
What Does VA Mean?
VA stands for volt-amperes — it's the power capacity of the transformer's secondary (24V) circuit. Think of it as how much electrical load the transformer can supply simultaneously.
The formula: VA = Volts × Amps
So a 40VA transformer at 24V can supply a maximum of 40 ÷ 24 = 1.67 amps to the 24V control circuit.
Common VA Ratings and Their Applications
20VA
- Older, simple single-zone systems
- Just a thermostat + contactor coil
- No humidifier, no zone controller, no fresh air damper
- Rarely sufficient for modern systems
40VA (most common for residential)
- Standard single-zone residential split systems
- Single thermostat + contactor + air handler control board
- Can handle one or two small accessories (humidistat, EAC)
- The safe default for most residential replacements
75VA
- Multi-zone systems with zone boards and multiple damper actuators
- Systems with humidifiers, HRVs, ERVs, or UV air purifiers
- Light commercial systems with multiple control loads
- Any time you're unsure, 75VA gives you headroom
How to Calculate What You Need
Add up the VA draw of everything connected to the 24V circuit:
- Contactor coil: ~5–10 VA
- Thermostat: ~3–5 VA
- Gas valve: ~10–20 VA
- Zone board: ~10–20 VA per zone
- Humidifier: ~5–10 VA
- UV light: ~5–15 VA
- Damper actuator: ~5–10 VA each
Add 20–25% safety margin to your total. If the sum is 30VA, use a 40VA transformer. If it's 55VA, use 75VA.
Signs Your Transformer Is Undersized
- Transformer gets very hot to the touch (warm is normal, hot is not)
- Transformer fails repeatedly after 6–18 months
- 24V circuit fuse blows frequently
- Thermostat display is dim or flickers
- System works fine in mild weather but has issues when multiple accessories run simultaneously
Primary Voltage: 120V or 240V?
Most residential HVAC transformers are 120V primary (plugs into the air handler's hot and neutral). Some units use 240V primary — always check the wiring diagram before ordering. Most universal replacement transformers accept both 120V and 240V primary with a wire jumper configuration.
Installation Notes
- Mount the transformer to a firm surface to prevent vibration damage
- Install a 3A fuse on the secondary (24V) side if not already present — it protects the transformer from shorted thermostat wires
- If a transformer keeps failing, find the cause — shorted wire, overloaded circuit, or failed contactor coil drawing excess current
