Before you order a capacitor

Choosing the right capacitor

Match the µF exactly. A dual run capacitor carries two ratings — the larger figure feeds the compressor (HERM terminal), the smaller feeds the condenser fan (FAN terminal). Both must match the original within the stated tolerance. A 45+5 µF unit is not interchangeable with a 40+5 µF one, even though the fan side is identical. Every capacitor here is rated ±5%, printed on the case.

Voltage can go up, never down. These are dual-rated 370/440 VAC, which means they replace either a 370 VAC or a 440 VAC original. Fitting a 370-only part where 440 was specified will shorten its life; going the other way is always safe.

Round or oval is a mounting decision. Electrically the two are identical. Pick whichever matches the bracket already in your condensing unit — an oval capacitor will not sit properly in a round strap, and vice versa.

Signs a capacitor has failed

A humming compressor that will not start, a condenser fan that needs a push to spin, intermittent tripping on hot days, or a visibly domed or leaking can. Capacitors degrade gradually, so a unit reading below its rated µF on a meter is due for replacement even if the system still runs.
