The Fan is Running But There's No Cold Air — What's Happening?
This is one of the most common summer HVAC complaints. The system appears to be running — you can hear the indoor fan, maybe even the outdoor unit — but the air coming out of the vents is warm or barely cool. Here's how to diagnose it, starting with the simplest causes.
1. Dirty Air Filter (5 minutes, free)
A severely clogged filter restricts airflow so badly that the evaporator coil freezes over. The frozen coil can't absorb heat, so warm air passes through. Check your filter first — if it's gray and caked with dust, change it and give the system 2–3 hours to thaw before testing again.
2. Thermostat Set to "Fan On" Instead of "Auto" (1 minute)
When the fan is set to "On," it runs continuously — even when the compressor is off. You'll get airflow but no cooling. Switch to "Auto" so the fan only runs when cooling is active.
3. Tripped Breaker or Blown Fuse on Outdoor Unit (5 minutes)
The indoor air handler and outdoor condensing unit are on separate circuits. The indoor fan can run fine while the outdoor unit's breaker is tripped. Check the breaker panel AND the disconnect box next to the outdoor unit. Reset once — if it trips again, stop and call a tech (there's a short somewhere).
4. Weak or Failed Run Capacitor ($25, 15 minutes)
The run capacitor keeps the compressor and fan motor running at full efficiency. A weak capacitor lets both run — but inefficiently. The compressor struggles, draws more current, and can't maintain adequate compression. Symptoms: AC runs for a while then blows warm, outdoor unit sounds sluggish, electric bill is higher than normal. Test with a multimeter in capacitance mode. If the reading is more than 6% below the rated MFD, replace it.
5. Refrigerant Leak (Requires a Licensed Tech)
Low refrigerant is a common cause of poor cooling. Signs: ice forming on the refrigerant line near the outdoor unit, hissing sound, AC that cools weakly but runs constantly. Refrigerant work requires EPA 608 certification — this is a professional job. A tech will find and repair the leak, then recharge the system.
6. Dirty Condenser Coils (30 minutes, garden hose)
The outdoor unit rejects heat through the condenser coils. If they're coated in dirt, cottonwood, or grass clippings, heat can't escape and cooling efficiency drops dramatically. Turn off power, spray the coils from the inside out with a garden hose, let dry, restore power. Do this every spring.
7. Failed Compressor (Major Repair)
If everything else tests fine and the system still can't cool, the compressor may have failed. Signs: the outdoor unit hums but doesn't cool, compressor is hot to the touch, the unit trips the breaker repeatedly. Compressor replacement is expensive — often $1,500–$3,000 — and on older systems, replacement of the full outdoor unit is more cost-effective.
Quick Diagnostic Path
- Check the filter → thermostat setting → breaker/disconnect
- Test the capacitor with a multimeter
- Clean the condenser coils
- If still not cooling → call a tech for refrigerant check and compressor diagnosis
