A 20-Minute Job That Saves $200+
Replacing an AC contactor is one of the most DIY-friendly HVAC repairs. The part costs $25–40, the job takes about 20 minutes, and you don't need any special tools beyond a screwdriver. HVAC companies charge $150–$300 for the same repair.
What You'll Need
- Replacement contactor (matching poles, amp rating, and 24V coil)
- Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
- Needle-nose pliers
- Multimeter (optional, for verification)
- Smartphone for photographing wiring
Step 1: Identify the Right Replacement Part
Before ordering, pull the old contactor's specs:
- Number of poles (2 or 3 — see our 2-pole vs 3-pole guide)
- Amp rating (typically 30A or 40A for residential)
- Coil voltage (24V in virtually all residential systems)
These are printed on the label on the side of the contactor. You can also match by part number, but specs-matching is more reliable across brands.
Step 2: Cut Power — Both Sources
This is critical:
- Turn off the breaker for the AC unit in your electrical panel
- Pull the disconnect block from the gray box next to the outdoor unit, or flip its breaker
- Wait 5 minutes — capacitors in the unit retain charge
- Verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester before touching anything
Step 3: Photograph the Wiring
Before disconnecting a single wire, take multiple clear photos of the existing contactor from different angles. You need to see exactly which wire goes to which terminal. Most contactors have 6–8 wires and they all need to go back in the same positions.
Step 4: Remove the Old Contactor
- Loosen the terminal screws and disconnect each wire one at a time
- As you remove each wire, you can label it with tape if helpful
- Unscrew the mounting screws holding the contactor to the unit
- Pull the old contactor out
Step 5: Install the New Contactor
- Mount the new contactor in the same position with mounting screws
- Using your photo as reference, connect each wire to the matching terminal
- Line terminals (L1, L2) connect to the large terminals at top
- Load terminals (T1, T2) connect to the large terminals at bottom
- The two smaller terminals (A1, A2) are the 24V coil — connect the thermostat wires here
- Tighten all terminal screws firmly — loose connections cause arcing and premature failure
Step 6: Verify and Test
- Double-check all connections against your photo
- Restore power at the disconnect, then the breaker
- Set thermostat to cool, 5° below room temperature
- Within 30 seconds you should hear the contactor click and the outdoor unit start
- Check for cold air at the vents within 3 minutes
Troubleshooting After Installation
- Unit doesn't start, no click — check that 24V wires are connected to coil terminals (A1/A2)
- Breaker trips immediately — a wire is touching the unit's chassis (short to ground)
- Contactor buzzes loudly — coil voltage issue or contacts are stuck; verify 24V is reaching the coil
- Unit runs but doesn't cool — contactor is fine; issue is elsewhere (capacitor, refrigerant)
