How to Test an HVAC Capacitor with a Multimeter (Step-by-Step)

You Don't Need an HVAC Tech to Test a Capacitor

A $15 multimeter and 5 minutes is all it takes to confirm whether your capacitor is dead. This is one of the most useful diagnostic skills a homeowner or tech can have — capacitor failure accounts for roughly 1 in 4 AC service calls every summer.

Safety First: Discharge the Capacitor

Capacitors store voltage even after power is cut. A charged capacitor can deliver a serious shock. Always discharge before touching terminals.

  1. Turn off power at the breaker AND the outdoor disconnect box
  2. Wait 5 minutes for residual charge to dissipate
  3. Use an insulated screwdriver to short across the terminals — touch the shaft across HERM and C, then FAN and C
  4. You may see a small spark — that's normal and means it was charged

How to Test: Step by Step

  1. Set your multimeter to capacitance mode (µF)

  4. Touch the probes to the terminals — polarity doesn't matter for capacitors
  5. Wait 3–5 seconds for the reading to stabilize

What the Reading Means

Compare your reading to the MFD value printed on the capacitor label:

  • Within ±5% of rated MFD — capacitor is good
  • 6–20% below rated MFD — weak, replace soon
  • More than 20% below rated MFD — replace immediately
  • Reads 0 or OL — capacitor is dead

Example: A 45 MFD capacitor reading between 42.3 and 47.7 µF passes. Anything below 36 µF fails.

No Capacitance Mode on Your Meter?

Use the resistance (Ohms) method as a rough check:

  1. Set meter to highest resistance range (20MΩ or similar)
  2. Touch probes to terminals
  3. Reading should climb from near-zero to a high value, then drop — this shows the capacitor is charging and discharging
  4. If reading stays at 0 or doesn't move — capacitor is failed

Note: this method only confirms dead/alive, not whether the capacitor is weak.
