That Buzz Is Telling You Something
A healthy contactor makes one sound: a single click when the thermostat calls, and another when the call ends. A hum, buzz or rapid chatter from the outdoor unit means the contactor is not pulling in cleanly — and every chatter is an arc across the contacts that shortens their life and stresses the compressor.
What the Contactor Does
The contactor is the relay that switches high voltage to the compressor and fan. A 24 V coil, fed by the thermostat through the control transformer, pulls a set of contacts closed. When the coil is energised properly, the contacts snap shut and stay shut. When it is not, they vibrate — and that is the noise you hear.
Five Common Causes
1. Low control voltage at the coil
The most common cause. The coil needs close to 24 V to hold firmly. A weak or undersized control transformer, a long thermostat wire run, or a loose or corroded low-voltage connection can leave it at 18 or 19 V — enough to pull in, not enough to hold. The contactor chatters.
2. Dirt, insects or debris
The armature has to travel freely to seat the contacts. A dead insect, a wasp nest fragment or a build-up of grit between the moving parts leaves a gap. The coil hums against something it cannot close.
3. Pitted or burnt contacts
Every switching cycle causes a tiny arc. Over thousands of cycles the contact faces pit and carbonise. The rough surface no longer seats flat, resistance rises, and the contactor buzzes and runs hot.
4. A failing coil
Coils develop shorted turns or an internal break. A coil that reads open on a meter will not pull in at all; one with shorted turns pulls in weakly and buzzes.
5. Wrong coil voltage
If a contactor with a 120 V or 240 V coil was fitted where a 24 V coil belongs, it will hum and never close. Check the coil marking, not the line voltage.
What Is Safe to Check Yourself
- Power off first. Breaker and outdoor disconnect. The line-side terminals stay live with the thermostat off.
- Look. With power isolated, inspect the contact faces. Black, pitted or welded contacts mean replacement.
- Clean the obvious. Debris in the armature can be brushed out. Do not file or sand contacts — it removes the plating and makes the problem worse.
- Check low-voltage connections. Tighten the two small coil terminals and the thermostat wire connections.
- Measure coil voltage, if you are comfortable with a meter. With power restored and the thermostat calling, 24 V across the coil terminals is correct. Well under that points to the transformer or wiring, not the contactor.
When to Replace
Replace the contactor if the contacts are pitted or welded, if the coil reads open, or if it still buzzes with a solid 24 V at the coil. Safety
Line voltage is present at the contactor whenever the breaker is on. Isolate at the breaker and the disconnect before opening the panel, and confirm with a meter before touching anything. If you are not confident working around 240 V, call a licensed HVAC technician.
